Quick answer

How to Get Your Vaishno Devi RFID Card

Two-part process: the Yatra Parchi is 100% online, the physical RFID card is not.

  1. Go to the official SMVDSB portal at maavaishnodevi.org (or the official app) — the only legitimate place to register.
  2. Create an account with your mobile number and register your Yatra Parchi for your travel date — free, fully online.
  3. Download or screenshot your Yatra Parchi confirmation.
  4. On arrival in Katra or Jammu, go to any RFID Registration Counter with your Parchi + a valid photo ID.
  5. Get photographed on the spot and collect your free, physical RFID card — this last step can't be done online.
⚠️ Anyone offering to courier or sell you an RFID card in advance is not affiliated with the Shrine Board. It is always free and always collected in person.
Skip the queue planning

Mid Holidays times your RFID registration, Katra transport, hotel and helicopter together — you land, we handle the rest.

Why it exists

Why Does Vaishno Devi Require an RFID Card?

Since December 2022, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) made the RFID card compulsory for every pilgrim, following a stampede incident that exposed gaps in crowd tracking. It does three things:

  • Real-time tracking of how many pilgrims are on the track at any moment, so the Board can reroute or pause flow on overcrowded stretches.
  • Faster emergency response — if you're separated from your group or need medical help, your card lets staff locate you quickly.
  • Access control — it confirms you're a registered pilgrim at every checkpoint from Banganga to the Bhawan.

It's a safety system, not a paperwork formality — which is also why skipping it isn't an option. You will be turned back at Banganga without one.

Price

Is the RFID Card Free or Paid?

The RFID card is 100% free. The SMVDSB does not charge anything to issue it, and there is no legitimate way to "buy" one online in advance. If a website or agent quotes you a price specifically for the RFID card itself, that's a red flag.

The only money rule to know: if you don't return the card at an exit checkpost after your yatra, you may be charged a ₹100 penalty per card. Hand it back at Banganga, Tarakote, the helipad, or the Jammu airport exit — wherever you finish.

Documents

Documents Required for the RFID Card

You only need two things at the counter:

RequirementDetails
Yatra ParchiYour online registration confirmation (printout or shown on phone)
Government photo IDAadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence — one per adult pilgrim
PhotographTaken on the spot at the counter — you don't need to bring one
Children under 5Exempt from the RFID card, but the accompanying guardian still needs theirs

No income proof, no medical certificate, no advance payment — if anyone asks for anything beyond an ID and your Parchi, you're at the wrong counter.

Most-missed step

How to Download Yatra Parchi After Registration

This is the step that trips up the most pilgrims — registering is easy, but finding the download link afterward isn't always obvious. Here's exactly where to look:

  1. Log in at maavaishnodevi.org with the mobile number you registered with.
  2. Go to your Dashboard.
  3. Click Transaction History.
  4. Find your booking by date and click Download/View Parchi.
  5. Save the PDF or keep the confirmation screen open on your phone — both are accepted at the counter.

Can't find it? It usually means registration wasn't fully completed (a payment or confirmation step skipped) rather than a site bug — check your registered mobile for an SMS/email confirmation link first.

Validity

How Long Is the RFID Card Valid?

Your RFID card is valid for one yatra only, tied to the date on your Parchi. Within that:

  • You must start the yatra (cross Banganga) within 6 hours of the card being issued.
  • The full yatra — darshan and return to Katra — should be completed within the time window set for your registration (typically 24 hours).
  • If you don't start or finish in time, the card can be confiscated at a checkpost and you may need to re-register.
  • It cannot be reused for a future visit — every new yatra needs a fresh Parchi and a fresh card.
The full process

Step-by-Step: RFID Card Registration

Putting it all together, here's the full journey from home to Bhawan:

01ONLINE

Register your Yatra Parchi

Do this before you travel, ideally a few days ahead during peak season (March–October).

02TRAVEL

Travel to Katra

This is the base camp for the yatra. Mid Holidays packages include Katra transfers if you'd rather skip local transport logistics — see packages.

03LOCATE

Find an RFID Registration Counter

Counters are at the Katra Bus Stand (24 hrs), Railway Station, Banganga check post, the Helipad, and Vaishnavi Dham/Niharika Complex.

04VERIFY

Show your Parchi + photo ID

Staff verify your details against your online registration.

05COLLECT

Get photographed and collect your card

Free, instant, usually under 30 minutes outside peak rush.

06WEAR IT

Wear it visibly

Use a lanyard around your neck or clip it to your bag — it gets scanned multiple times on the route.

07RETURN

Return it on exit

At Banganga, Tarakote, the helipad, or the Jammu airport counter, whichever you use to leave.

Plan it once, not on the fly

Most pilgrims don't realise they can pre-book everything else around this — hotel in Katra, helicopter to Sanjichhat, and a guide who knows exactly which counter has the shortest queue today.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Vaishno Devi RFID card mandatory for children?

Yes, for everyone above age 5. Children under 5 are exempt, but the accompanying adult still needs their own card.

Can I get the RFID card fully online without visiting a counter?

No. Yatra Parchi registration is online; the physical RFID card requires an in-person visit for photo capture and ID verification.

What is the full form of RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification — a chip-embedded card that lets the Shrine Board track pilgrim movement electronically at checkpoints.

What if I lose my RFID card mid-yatra?

Report it immediately at the nearest Shrine Board information centre or police post on the route. You'll likely need your Yatra Parchi again to get a replacement — don't keep walking without one, you'll be turned back.

Are RFID counters open 24 hours?

The Katra Bus Stand counter runs 24 hours. Others (Railway Station, Helipad, Vaishnavi Dham) typically run from early morning to late evening — timings can shift in peak season, so confirm on arrival if you're travelling overnight.

Is there a separate RFID card for helicopter or ropeway passengers?

No. Even if you've booked a helicopter or ropeway ticket, you still need a valid RFID card — it's checked independently of your transport booking.

How much does the RFID card cost?

Nothing. It's free. The only charge possible is a ₹100 penalty if you fail to return the card at an exit checkpost.

Ready when you are

Let Mid Holidays Handle the Logistics

You now know exactly how the RFID process works — but most pilgrims still lose hours at counters or scramble for last-minute Katra hotels.
