Doodhpathri & Yusmarg — Kashmir’s Hidden Meadows That Most Tourists Miss

Doodhpathri & Yusmarg — Kashmir’s Beautiful Secrets Most Tourists Never See

While most Kashmir itineraries cover the well-known quartet of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, the valley holds many more extraordinary destinations that remain blissfully uncrowded. Two of the most beautiful — and most overlooked — are Doodhpathri and Yusmarg.

Our team at Mid Holidays has been guiding travellers to these hidden meadows for years. Here is the complete guide.

Doodhpathri — The Valley of Milk

Doodhpathri, meaning “Valley of Milk” in Kashmiri, gets its name from the milky-white streams that flow through it, fed by melting snow from the surrounding peaks. Located at approximately 2,730 metres above sea level in the Budgam district, it is about 42 km from Srinagar.

What Makes Doodhpathri Special

Unlike Gulmarg which sees heavy footfall, Doodhpathri receives far fewer visitors — which is precisely its charm. The meadows are vast and green, the streams are genuinely milky-white (due to dissolved minerals from glacial melt), and the surrounding pine and fir forests are dense and untouched.

The silence at Doodhpathri is its own kind of luxury. No crowded gondola queues, no rows of tourist stalls — just expansive grassland, grazing horses, wildflowers, and the distant sound of a stream.

How to Reach Doodhpathri

  • From Srinagar: 42 km via Budgam — approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road
  • Road is motorable up to a certain point; then a short walk through meadow terrain
  • Our offbeat package includes private cab transportation directly to Doodhpathri

Best Time to Visit Doodhpathri

  • May to October: Meadows are fully green, all streams flowing, weather pleasant
  • June–July: Peak wildflower season — the meadows are carpeted with flowers
  • Doodhpathri is generally closed in winter due to heavy snow

Things to Do at Doodhpathri

  • Pony rides through the meadows
  • Photography — the milky streams, wildflowers, and mountains make extraordinary images
  • Picnic by the stream — the meadow is ideal for a packed lunch in nature
  • Short walks along the stream banks
  • Watch local Gujjar shepherds with their flocks — an authentic rural Kashmir scene

Yusmarg — Meadow of Jesus

Yusmarg — a name that translates roughly as “Meadow of Jesus” (from the Kashmiri and Persian words) — is a high-altitude meadow located at 2,395 metres in the Budgam district, approximately 47 km from Srinagar.

What Makes Yusmarg Special

Yusmarg is encircled by dense conifer forests of fir, pine, and deodar cedar. The meadow itself is broad and open, with the Doodh Ganga (“Milk River”) flowing through it. In spring and early summer, the meadow is covered in wildflowers. From certain points, you can see the Pir Panjal mountain range clearly.

Yusmarg feels like Kashmir 30 years ago — unhurried, uncrowded, and deeply peaceful. It is particularly popular with domestic tourists who want to experience Kashmir away from the tourist trail.

How to Reach Yusmarg

  • From Srinagar: 47 km via Charar-i-Sharief — approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
  • The route passes through Charar-i-Sharief, home to the famous shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali (Nund Rishi)
  • Our package includes private cab with a stop at Charar-i-Sharief shrine

Best Time to Visit Yusmarg

  • April to October: Best overall. April–May for flowers, June–August for trekking
  • Winter: Yusmarg receives heavy snowfall and becomes a quiet winter destination — but roads can be difficult

Things to Do at Yusmarg

  • Pony rides through the meadow and forest trails
  • Trek to Sang-e-Safed glacial lake (approximately 11 km from Yusmarg) — a full-day trek for fit travellers
  • Visit Doodh Ganga river and surrounding forest paths
  • Photography — Yusmarg is particularly beautiful in the golden hour light
  • Picnic in the meadow surrounded by forest
