Top Things to Do in Kashmir in Winter

1. Skiing & Snowboarding at Gulmarg

Gulmarg is one of Asia’s best ski destinations — with slopes at altitudes above 3,000 metres and powder snow from December to March. Equipment rental and professional ski instructors are available on-site. Ski runs suit beginners and advanced skiers alike. Gondola Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (3,980 m) offers the most challenging runs.

2. Snow Activities at Gulmarg Base

Not a skier? No problem. Snow sledging, snowball fights, snow tubing, and building snowmen are all available near the Gondola base station. Kids and adults love it equally. Cost: ₹200–₹500 per activity.

3. Frozen Dal Lake Experience

In peak January cold, parts of Dal Lake freeze — a rare and stunning sight. Walking on the frozen lake (where safe) is an experience unlike anything else. The mist rising from the unfrozen parts against the snow-covered Zabarwan mountains is surreal.

4. Houseboat in Winter

Staying on a Dal Lake houseboat in winter is a unique experience — warm interiors with traditional Kashmiri kangri heaters, views of snow-covered mountains from your bedroom window. Most houseboats offer full central heating in winter.

5. Chillai Kalan — Coldest Period

Chillai Kalan is the 40-day period of harshest winter in Kashmir (21 December to 29 January). Temperatures drop to –10°C at night in Srinagar and –20°C in Gulmarg. The valley is at its most beautiful — but proper winter gear is absolutely essential.

6. Sonamarg Snow Visit

Sonamarg town is accessible in early winter (November–December) before the road closes. Thajiwas Glacier in light snowfall is magical. Once Zojila closes (usually December), Sonamarg becomes inaccessible until May.

Kashmir Winter Taxi Rates 2026

In winter, Innova and Innova Crysta are strongly recommended over sedans — they handle snow and icy mountain roads much better. Mid Holidays provides winter-ready vehicles with experienced snow-season drivers.

Yes. Srinagar typically receives its first significant snowfall in December. January sees the heaviest snowfall during Chillai Kalan. Snowfall in the city itself is common, but Gulmarg (at higher altitude) receives heavy snow from November onwards.

Is Kashmir safe to visit in winter 2026?

Yes. Kashmir is safe and fully operational for tourists in winter. Hotels, restaurants, taxi services, and the Gulmarg ski resort all function normally. Road conditions on mountain routes require experienced drivers — which is exactly what Mid Holidays provides.

Can families with children visit Kashmir in winter?

Yes — Kashmir in winter is actually very popular with families who want their children to experience real snow for the first time. Snow activities at Gulmarg are child-friendly and completely safe. Dress children in proper layered winter clothing and waterproof boots.

What is the temperature in Kashmir in January?

In January, Srinagar temperatures range from –6°C (night) to 4°C (afternoon). Gulmarg is much colder: –15°C to –5°C. Pahalgam and Sonamarg are also extremely cold. Always book heated hotels and carry proper winter gear.

Which is better — Kashmir in summer or winter?

Both seasons offer completely different experiences. Summer (May–August) gives you green meadows, flowers, open roads, and pleasant weather. Winter (December–February) gives you snow, skiing, frozen lakes, and magical landscapes. Families with young children often prefer summer. Adventure seekers and honeymooners love winter. Both are worth experiencing.
