🙏 What is Vaishno Devi?

Nestled in the Trikuta Mountains of Reasi district, Jammu & Kashmir, Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in India. Every year, over 8 million pilgrims undertake the sacred Vaishno Devi yatra — making it the second most visited religious site in the world after the Tirumala Temple.

The shrine is dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi — a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Durga — and is believed to fulfill the wishes of devotees who visit with a pure heart. The base camp is Katra, a small town in Jammu district, and the trek to Bhawan covers approximately 13–14 km through scenic mountain terrain.

💡 Did You Know? The Vaishno Devi shrine sits at an altitude of 5,200 feet (1,585 metres) above sea level. The cave temple holds three natural rock formations (Pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

At Mid Holidays, we specialise in crafting affordable, customised Vaishno Devi tour packages that handle every detail — from your hotel in Katra to yatra registration, transfers, and sightseeing — so you can focus entirely on your spiritual journey.

🛣️ How to Reach Vaishno Devi – All Routes

Katra (the base camp for Vaishno Devi) is well-connected by air, rail, and road.

By Air

The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (IXJ), approximately 50 km from Katra. Regular flights operate from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh. Jammu Airport information is available here. Mid Holidays offers airport pickup directly to Katra.

By Train

Katra Railway Station is directly on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). Trains like the Vande Bharat Express and Shri Shakti Express connect Katra to Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and other major cities. Check train availability on IRCTC's official website.

By Road

Helicopter Service

A helicopter service operates from Katra helipad to Sanjhichhat (near Bhawan), cutting trekking time significantly. It is ideal for senior citizens, differently-abled pilgrims, and young children. Booking is available through Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's official portal.

🗓️ Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi

Vaishno Devi is open all year round, but different seasons offer very different experiences.

🌸
March – June
✅ Best Season — Pleasant weather, clear trails, max visibility
🍂
September – November
✅ Excellent — Post-monsoon greenery, cool temperatures, Navratri rush
❄️
December – February
⚠️ Snow season — Scenic but cold. Trek can be slippery. Carry warm gear.
🌧️
July – August
⚠️ Monsoon — Heavy rainfall, slippery paths. Possible landslide disruptions.

The two Navratri periods (March–April and October) see the highest footfall. If you want a quieter yatra experience, plan your trip for early March or late November.

💡 Pro Travel Tips for a Perfect Vaishno Devi Yatra

Having guided thousands of pilgrims to Bhawan, here are Mid Holidays' insider tips for a smooth, blessed yatra:

  • Book yatra registration in advance: Get your Yatra Slip online from the Shrine Board's official website to avoid long queues at Katra.
  • Start the trek by 3–4 AM: Early morning trekkers avoid the midday crowd and heat. Cooler air makes the climb easier.
  • Wear proper trekking shoes: The trail has uneven stones and can be slippery. Avoid sandals and flip-flops entirely.
  • Carry light: Luggage lockers are available at Katra. Only carry a small daypack with water, snacks, warm layer, and documents.
  • Opt for ponies or palki for elderly: Ponies, palanquins, and electric vehicles are available for senior citizens and children at very reasonable rates.
  • Visit Bhairon Baba Temple: It is considered mandatory to visit Bhairon Baba after Mata's darshan — located 2.5 km from Bhawan on the return trail.
  • Carry valid ID proof: Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License is mandatory for yatra registration.
  • Try the Katra local food: Don't miss Rajma-Chawal, Chole Bhature and traditional Dogra kheer at local dhabas in Katra.
